Fiba International Summer Slam, Scotland 2015
Jun 15, 2015, 2:54 pm

This weekend the Welsh Under 14's travelled to Sterling Scotland to play in the FIBA International Summer Slam 2015 which is run by Basketball Scotland.

This was the third year for the event and the first time that a Welsh side had been invited. The three day event involved sides from Northern Ireland, Czech Rep (TJ Sokol Prazsky a top club side) and the home nation Scotland.

Again the Tigers were proud to have Ben Evans selected for this squad, with him also being the youngest player in the side.

This was the first International tournament that any of the players had been involved with, so it was a great honour for them all to recieve their first Welsh caps.

Although team Wales lost all of their games throughout the three days, the players confidence grew with each game against much bigger and experienced teams.

The boys were cheered on by a large travelling support of very proud parents who did not stop singing all weekend.

The Team and management were an absolute credit to their country.

Finally in a team awards ceromony after the final game MVP's were choosen by the Coaching Staff for each game :-  Ben Thomas - UWIC, Ben Evans & Sam Hopkins - Cougars and finally for his overall performance in all games Dafydd Griffiths - Panthers.

However there was one last award which was presented to Ben Evans (Tigers), for the "Player with the best attitude" throughout the weekend, something he should be very proud of.

What a year it has been for Tonyrefail Tigers, which for a small club has produced so many boys capable of playing for Wales.... This is not only due to the hard work of the boys but also our Coach Dave....

Surrey Tournament
Jun 15, 2015, 2:24 pm

Unfortunately James was unable to travel to the tournament but both Rhys Evans and Jordan Williams played in a series of 4 games for the Under 15's.

Wales played Surrey A & B, Sussex and Kent, and although losing all games against much bigger sides, the Team improved with each game and were well in contention in two of the games.

The previous day saw the newly formed Under 11 Welsh team also play in the tournament and again the Tigers were represented in this with Dan Williams (Jordans brother) playing his part in the side.

Congratulations to Dan on his first games for Wales.

Wales U15 at Surrey
May 28, 2015, 8:56 pm

Congratulations to James Large, Jordan Williams and Rhys Evans who have again been selected to represent Wales at an U15 tournament at Surrey University on June 7th..

Wales will play a number of English counties including Surrey, Sussex and Kent... This should prove a tough series of games due to the strength of the English teams.

The boys will again be great ambassadors for the club and we wish them well for the tournament

Wales U16 v England U15
May 28, 2015, 8:43 pm

Congratulations to James Large who was selected to play for Wales against England last weekend in an International friendly at Ystrad Fach LC.

It was a fast and physical encounter and following a close first half the larger England side took control of the second half winning  with some ease.

Well done to James from everyone at the club.

The evening has proved very successful over the last few years and is definately not one to miss.. Training on this evening will be cancelled so it is hoped that everyone will be available to attend... The evening normally finishes around 8.30pm

It would be appreciated if payment in full could be given to Dave, Mandy or Geraint ASAP.

Wales v Northern Ireland U15's
May 4, 2015, 10:02 pm

James Large, Jordan Williams & Rhys Evans travelled to Belfast over the May Bank Holiday weekend and competed in a series of 3 games against a highly skilled and very physical Northern Ireland team.

This was the first experience of International basketball for all but two of the team (James being one of them having recently returned with the U16 team from San Marino).

The first game was played on Saturday afternoon (with most of the boys being up since 4am to travel to Belfast !!!!), and this showed as Wales suffered a 66-35 defeat. No-one was expecting the pace and skill level shown by the Irish players.

However after a good nights sleep and a good team talk by the coaches, Sunday was a new day.

Back to back games were played Sunday afternoon and although both resulted in defeat, Game 2...79-45 & Game 3... 70-53, it was obvious that the boys were adjusting to the higher level of play with improvement in each game...

There was a great team spirt throughout the weekend and our boys were a credit to the club... It was a proud moment to see all three players on the court together in the last quarter of the final game.

Finally during an awards presentation before the players left for the airport James was voted MVP by the coaching staff for his performance in the first game and Rhys was voted MVP for his performance in the last game....

Well done to all three...
